Express take on Purefoods in Sunday’s start of best-of-7 semis
Saturday, 21 January 2006
ANTIPOLO CITY. -- Indeed, there’s a first time for everything.
After squandering an 11-point lead with 3:21 left in regulation, the young Air21 squad showed poise and character in the extra period to beat Talk ‘N Text 117-110 Saturday night in a do-or-die Game 5 of their quarterfinal playoff in the San Mig Coffee Fiesta Conference.
The Express, who entered the league in 2002, thus advanced to the semifinals of a conference for the first time in franchise history. In contrast, the Phone Pals missed the Final Four for the first time in six conferences under head coach Joel Banal.
Led by Ronald Tubid and Gary David, the Express wrapped up their first-ever best-of-5 series, three games to one and will plunge right back into action less than 24 hours after quarterfinal clincher, taking on Purefoods in Game 1 of their best-of-seven semifinal at the Araneta Coliseum slated Sunday.
In front of a sparse but roaring crowd at the Ynares Center, Air21 blanked the Phone Pals 9-0 in the final 3:34 of overtime with David scoring four points and Tubid adding three in that pivotal stretch as the Express took the lead for good after Talk ‘N Text had taken a 110-108 lead midway through OT.
Air21 head coach Bo Perasol said Talk ‘N Text center Asi Taulava must have unknowingly given his team the motivation for the win. Perasol said he heard Taulava’s post-game statements after the Phone Pals’ 99-89 win in Game 4 last Friday that the evened the series and used it to fire up his team.
“Not to take offense against Asi, but he said after Game 4 that they were the better team…I wrote that in our board before the game and I think that might have worked for us. We were all fired up and we never gave up, “ said the rookie head coach whose team whooped it up after the game as if they had won the championship, with confetti and party poppers raining on the team’s bench.
“I also told them this might be our last four quarters in the conference and that we worked so hard to get into this position. And I think our players did not yet want to end their conference,” added Perasol.
Trailing 72-80, 22 seconds into the final period, Tubid had 12 of his 19 points while David had 6 of his similar 19 in a 24-8 run which gave Air21 a commanding 102-91 lead at the 3:21 mark of the fourth quarter. But Talk ‘N Text’s Willie Miller had a string of six points and Jimmy Alapag had a triple with two seconds left in regulation to cap a 15-4 counter-run by the Phone Pals which tied the score at 106-all. Wynne Arboleda then missed on a sideline jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime where Tubid and David came through again for the Express.
Talk ‘N Text, which had six players finishing in double figures led by the 20 of Darvin Ham, used up what looked like its remaining one bar of power to force the extra period. But in the final 3:34 of OT, the Phone Pals seemed finally drained with energy, going 0-of-9 from the field and committing one turnover in a forgettable finish.
Talk ‘N Text, which finished not lower than third in the previous conferences, ended their campaign with a fifth-place finish.
Sunday’s Game 1 of a first-ever best-of-seven semifinal in PBA history will already be Air21’s seventh game in 10 days and its ninth in 15 days. And the Express will be up against a team which is fully-rested, the Giants’ not having seen action since Dec. 18 curiously in a non-bearing 110-109 loss to Air21 where Purefoods was already assured of an outright semis seat and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, win or lose.
But Perasol isn’t at all bothered.
“If there is something this team is not—it is being tired,“ he said. “I think we’re the youngest and best conditioned team in the league right now. We’ll be ready for Purefoods.” (FM)
so now you know why i am astonished and blissful. i never expected Air21 to win (of course i was desperately praying they would) especially against an experienced and mature team like Talk n Text. pero Air21 was able to defeat the San Miguel Beermen nga e, so i think it was possible. now they're being called 'Champion Slayers'. cool!
(Now Mr. Taulava, is that what you call fluke?) *evil laugh*
Kudos to the entire Team: the players, the coaching staff, the waterboys, the towelboys and basta everyone who supports the Air21. Good luck against Purefoods!

"Real love is when you love someone without asking for anything in return. It's when even a passing smile can make your day, a small pat on the back can make you feel alive and the mere sound of his/her voice can move you to break out into a song inside.
Real love isn't fate nor is it written in the stars. You , yourself, have to make love happen. It's a choice; a commitment that you stand up for. And even if you're uncertain if he'she loves you back, you take the risk of facing whatever pain that would come your way simply because you believe he/she is worth everything and more."
